Nils and Bailey Rowland, owners of Crème de la Cocoa in Augustine, shared passion for cakes and desserts all began when they met in middle school. As a pre-teen, Niles started taking charge of his parents’ home kitchen.
It’s no secret that there are a lot of great restaurants in St. Augustine. What’s far less common, however, are great dessert shops. In fact, if you didn’t know where to look, you might not ever find one. But, if you were to find yourself searching at the north end of San Marco Avenue, you’d be in the right spot.

Creme de la Cocoa has opened in a new location, at 299 San Marco Ave., St. Augustine … just across the street from its former location at DOS Coffee & Wine, 300 San Marco Ave. Chef Nils Rowland and his wife Bailey offer handmade chocolates, marshmallows (asked for one toasted!), specialty desserts, cookies, brownies, oatmeal cream pies, and macarons, as well as custom cakes for any special occasion.
Ever since his father taught him to make lemon meringue pie when he was 11 years old, Nils Rowland has been obsessed with creating desserts as fetching as they are decadent. A graduate of the Notter School of Pastry Arts in Orlando, with many years’ experience in various resorts in private clubs, he launched last summer his own confectionary shop with his wife—and college sweetheart—Bailey.
